‘Tamil Nadu Will Not Be Well Served’: TN MPs Unite Against Centre’s Delimitation Move

A cross-party group of Tamil Nadu parliamentarians met on Saturday to oppose the Union government’s proposed delimitation exercise, warning that redrawing electoral boundaries based on population metrics would unfairly penalize the state and weaken its voice in Parliament.

The consultation, chaired by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay at Kalaivanar Arangam in Chennai, brought together roughly 21 Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha members. Participating lawmakers—representing parties including the Congress, VCK, CPI, CPI(M), MDMK, and IUML—unanimously called for freezing the total strength of the Lok Sabha at 543 seats and preserving Tamil Nadu’s allocation of 39 Lok Sabha seats. Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Congress MP Karti Chidambaram urged political parties to look past party lines to protect the state's democratic influence. He stated that any modification—whether calculated purely on population growth or through a uniform proportionate expansion—would diminish Tamil Nadu's political standing at the national level.

Congress MP Praveen Chakraborty and Congress MP Vishnu Prasad expressed disappointment over the absence of major regional rivals, criticizing both the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and the main opposition All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) for skipping the session. Other parties, including the PMK and DMDK, also stayed away from the consultation. Out of Tamil Nadu’s 57 total parliamentarians across both Houses, 36 chose not to attend.

DMK representatives defended their decision to boycott the session, questioning the TVK-led state administration’s overall stance on delimitation and noting a lack of a clear formal agenda prior to the meeting. The controversy stems from long-standing concerns among southern Indian states over the upcoming post-2026 delimitation process. Over the past five decades, Tamil Nadu and neighboring states have effectively executed national population control policies, resulting in slower demographic growth compared to northern states. Political leaders contend that strict population-proportional reapportionment would impose a "demographic penalty," reducing southern parliamentary representation while rewarding states with higher population growth.
