Breaking his silence on the ongoing student demonstrations in Jharkhand, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi stated on Thursday that all administrations must listen to young people and take decisive action to overhaul the country's education system. Speaking during an interactive "Ask Me Anything" session on Instagram, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha addressed questions concerning the student agitations in Jharkhand, where the Congress party is a partner in the ruling Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) coalition.

Gandhi asserted that youth agitations nationwide stem from structural failures within the academic framework. "The student protests happening in the country are against the education system. I have stated it clearly in Kota and Dehradun, and will say it in Allahabad: our education system has collapsed; it is unaffordable and oppressive," Gandhi said. Jharkhand JPSC-JSSC Protest: CM Hemant Soren Invites 5-Member Delegation; Aspirants Seek Time Before Talks.

Emphasising accountability across political lines, he added, "Every government, be it the central government, Jharkhand government or a Congress government, should listen to what students are saying and take action to change the education system."

Background on the Jharkhand Protests

The remarks follow weeks of mounting pressure regarding student-led agitations in Jharkhand, which entered their thirteenth day. Demonstrators and job aspirants have been protesting against alleged irregularities in recruitment examinations, including the 14th Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC) civil services examination. Rahul Gandhi's Prayagraj Student Outreach Venue Permission Revoked Ahead of August 8 Event.

While the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) previously criticised Gandhi for remaining silent on the state-level protests while vocal about central issues like NEET-UG demonstrations in Delhi, state Congress leaders have since met with Chief Minister Hemant Soren to submit a memorandum of demands. Chief Minister Soren has reiterated that the state government is treating the students' concerns with utmost seriousness, noting that probe agencies are actively investigating the matter to provide a permanent solution and maintain administrative integrity.
