The world-renowned Jagannath Rath Yatra commenced on July 16, 2026, in the coastal town of Puri, drawing hundreds of thousands of devotees from across India and the globe. The annual festival, which marks the journey of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Goddess Subhadra from their primary shrine to the Gundicha Temple, began with traditional grandeur along the Bada Danda (Grand Road). Local authorities deployed extensive security and crowd management measures to oversee the massive influx of pilgrims.

The Grand Chariot Procession Takes Shape

The three deities travel in distinct, massive wooden chariots built completely fresh each year using traditional joinery without a single iron nail. Lord Balabhadra travels in the 14-wheeled Taladhwaja, which stands roughly 44 feet tall and is draped in red and blue-green cloth. Lord Jagannath's Nandighosha is the tallest at 45 feet, rolling on 16 wheels and adorned in signature red and yellow fabrics. Goddess Subhadra's chariot, Darpadalan, stands at 43 feet with 12 wheels and features distinct red and black draping. The highlight of the afternoon was the synchronized pulling of the chariots by the sea of gathered pilgrims. A wave of spiritual fervor swept through the crowd as devotees took hold of Swarnachuda, the sacred rope attached to Goddess Subhadra’s chariot, Darpadalan. Men, women, and children lined the Grand Road, pulling in a coordinated, rhythmic effort accompanied by the resonance of cymbals, conch shells, and traditional drums.

According to long-standing custom, the movement of the chariots follows a specific sequence. Lord Balabhadra’s Taladhwaja led the divine convoy down the three-kilometer stretch, followed closely by Goddess Subhadra's chariot, with Lord Jagannath's Nandighosha bringing up the rear.

Administration Responds to Crowd Challenges

With millions packed into the city, the local administration faced significant crowd-control challenges. Heavy humidity and intense pushing led to a brief stampede-like situation during the procession, resulting in the unfortunate death of one devotee due to suffocation.

Emergency response teams reacted swiftly to the crisis. The Odisha Police and Fire Services personnel extracted dozens of distressed pilgrims from the dense crowds, administering first aid and transferring them to nearby medical facilities for treatment. Water misters and medical camps set up along the Bada Danda helped mitigate the effects of the summer heat for the rest of the day. Historic Context and Ritual Milestones

The Rath Yatra is considered one of the oldest continuously celebrated religious festivals in the world. Unlike standard Hindu temple practices, the festival is unique because the deities leave the inner sanctum so that all people, regardless of caste or nationality, can catch a glimpse of them.

The day's events were preceded by Chhera Pahanra, a highly symbolic ritual where the Gajapati Maharaja (the King of Puri) sweeps the chariot platforms with a golden broom. This acts as a demonstration of humility, indicating that even royalty serves as a humble custodian before the divine.

The three deities will now reside at the Gundicha Temple for a nine-day stay before returning to the main Jagannath Temple during the Bahuda Yatra (return procession) scheduled for Friday, July 24, 2026.
