Family of an 8-year-old girl who recently lost her life following a brain aneurysm has given four others a new lease of life. The parents of the child have donated her organs to patients who were in need of them. The child was admitted at the Lilavati Hospital, Bandra on February 27, after she suffered a stroke. It was later determined that she was suffering from a brain aneurism, which caused a part of the artery in the brain to protrude. This was alleged to be the cause of the stroke. Although brain strokes are not common in children, it can be life threatening in the rare cases when it occurs.

The Times of India reported that the child couldn’t be saved despite the best efforts of the team at Lilavati and was declared dead at 6:30 PM on Monday. Dr Sitaram Gawde, a medical superintendent told TNN that the parents agreed to donating her organs only after they were sure of the distribution system.

The child’s heart was given to a 10-year-old from Fortis Mulund.

Among her kidneys, one was given to patients from Jaslok Hospital and the other to a patient at Lilavati.  The transplant coordinator said that finding the right paediatric cadaver donors are difficult. Patients who are in need of organs therefore have to wait for a very long time before they get a suitable match.
