A mother from Perth, Australia was left heartbroken after she discovered her daughter had lost her life due to protein shakes. Michelle White lost her 25-year-old daughter, Meegan Hefford, in 2017 after protein shakes were too much for her to handle. Michelle has called for regulations of protein shakes after the devastating incident. Meegan was a mother of two and a gym freak. When Meegan initially started showing interest in gym and fitness, Michelle was happy watching her teenage daughter taking care of herself. Meegan was keen to lose all the baby fat when she had her first baby at the age of 18. Things got worse after she had her second baby. Meegan soon got obsessed with working out and would ask her mother to babysit for her. Two months before Meegan’s death, her mother noticed her hands were shaking as she made herself another protein shake to go with her supplements. Michelle advised Meegan to slow down with the gym madness and her shakes. Meegan aspired to enter professional bodybuilding and worked out as much as she could.

In 2017, Meegan Hefford was found unconscious on her bedroom floor by two women carrying out a rental inspection. Michelle was soon informed about this and she tried to calm herself by saying Meegan was probably just tired from frequently working out. She comforted herself by saying Meegan was healthier than most people and she’s okay. Meegan was officially declared brain dead, three days later. Michelle found out her granddaughter, Alexa, too had a genetic disorder. Alexa’s urea cycle disorder could be treated with proper diet and medication.

What are the Side Effects of Protein Shakes?

Although, Protein shakes are good for you, there are a few concerns that should not be avoided

  • It may cause digestive problems.
  • It may damage your kidneys.
  • It can damage your liver.
  • It can lower your blood pressure, and not in a good way.
  • It can cause hormonal imbalance.
  • It can increase the risk of cancer.

After Michelle White's concerns with protein shakes and supplements, research was conducted by Australia’s Ministry of Health.  Dr David Cusack of The New South Wales Department of Primary Industries Food Authority’s informed people certain products contained NABD, which has a very similar chemical structure to methamphetamine. The ingredient has now been banned in health supplements. Doctors recommend increasing protein level organically through food.
