Indian Embassy Issues Fresh Thailand Travel Advisory, Flags INR 58,000 Cash Requirement
The Indian embassy in Bangkok has issued a fresh travel advisory for Indian nationals visiting Thailand, asking tourists entering under the Visa on Arrival (VoA) scheme to carry at least 20,000 Thai baht in cash per person, roughly INR 57,000 to 58,000 at current exchange rates.
The advisory comes after Thailand rolled back the visa-free entry facility Indian travellers had been using for several months, shifting them back to the VoA framework.
The embassy said the change makes compliance with entry requirements more important than before, and has laid out a detailed checklist for travellers ahead of departure.
Why The Cash Rule Applies
Under the VoA scheme, Indian tourists are expected to carry a minimum of 20,000 baht per passenger as proof they can support themselves during their stay. Immigration officers are not required to check this for every visitor, but they retain the authority to ask for it, and the embassy has advised carrying the amount to avoid complications at entry points. Thailand's Cabinet approved the shift away from visa-free entry for Indian nationals on May 19, moving them to the VoA arrangement as part of a broader review of the country's immigration and border policies following a period of relaxed entry rules aimed at reviving tourism.
Documents Travellers Must Carry
According to the advisory, Indian nationals should have the following ready before boarding their flight and at the immigration counter:
A passport valid for at least six months from the date of arrival, a confirmed return or onward ticket, confirmed hotel or accommodation details, a clear travel itinerary, and a completed Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC), which can be submitted within 72 hours of arrival. Travellers should also carry the visa or entry permission appropriate to their purpose of travel. Group travellers have been specifically advised to ensure each member carries their own set of documents rather than relying on one person in the group.
Warning For Travellers Seeking Employment
The embassy issued a separate caution for Indians travelling to Thailand for work. Those who have already secured a job offer should not enter the country using the VoA facility or a tourist visa, and must instead obtain the appropriate employment visa before departure. Entering on tourist status with the intention of working violates Thai immigration rules and could lead to legal action or penalties.
Passengers transiting through Thai airports have also been told to carry all documentation needed for their onward destination, including confirmed onward tickets and any required visas, to avoid disruptions during transit.
General Safety Advisory
Beyond immigration requirements, the embassy has advised Indian visitors to take basic precautions during their stay. These include carrying passport copies separately from the original document, keeping passports and cash in different places, exchanging currency only through authorised dealers, and retaining exchange receipts.
Travellers have also been cautioned to stay alert against pickpockets in crowded markets and public transport, avoid unsolicited offers from brokers or touts, and exercise caution while renting jet skis or speedboats at beach destinations, where tourists have previously reported disputes over alleged damage and compensation demands.
