Hyderabad, December 10: A video of a woman entrepreneur is going viral on social media with a false claim that it is an old video of a veterinarian who was raped and killed in Hyderabad. Even though the law prohibits citizens and authorities from revealing a rape victim's identity, the unrelated video is being shared widely. The Hindi caption shared with the video misidentifies the Hyderabad rape victim. The woman shown in the video is from Telangana but she is not who was sexually assaulted and killed. The video shows the woman entrepreneur receiving an award at an event which appears to be a government function. The video is being shared with a Hindi caption that translates to the following: "The death of Disha (name changed) in the Hyderabad case is not only an end of a doctor, but a government awarded vet scientist and researcher has been sacrificed for lust. This is an incredible harm to the world." The video is of some other woman whose identity we are not revealing respecting her privacy. Revealing the identity of a victim of certain offences, including rape, is punishable under Section 228A of the Indian Penal Code. The offence may attract imprisonment of a term which may extend to two years and fine. The Supreme Court has also issued guidelines barring media houses and person(s) from printing or publishing the name of the victim or even in a remote manner disclose any facts which can lead to the victim being identified and make her identity known to the public at large.
The Hyderabad veterinarian was raped and killed near the outer Ring Road at Shamshabad on the outskirts of Hyderabad. The police arrested four accused in connection with the heinous crime. On the intervening night of September 27 and 28, they were gunned down in an encounter by cops.
