A damaged or defective lithium ion battery can in some cases undergo a dangerous thermal event if it suffers an internal fault, physical damage or excessive heat. However, experts note that it would be premature to conclude a battery defect caused this incident without a full technical examination of the device. Heat buildup can also become a concern when a smartphone is subjected to demanding conditions, damaged, exposed to unsuitable charging equipment or develops a technical fault.

In India, mobile phones fall under mandatory safety requirements set by the Bureau of Indian Standards under IS/IEC 62368-1. The Greater Noida case highlights why users should take unusual heating, swelling, smoke or unusual smells seriously. Phones showing such warning signs should not continue to be used and should be kept away from flammable materials.
