The Punjab and Haryana High Court recently acquitted a man accused of committing rape on the pretext of a false promise to marry the alleged victim. The court observed that the failure on the part of the accused to fulfil his promise "cannot be construed to mean that the promise itself was false." The high court bench of Justice Harpreet Singh Brar said that "there is no allegation in the testimony or the statement of the victim that when the appellant promised to marry her, it was done in bad faith or with the intention to deceive her."
