Banu was widely considered to be the first female professional wrestler from India. According to a report on BBC, Banu's foray into wrestling was a path-breaking one, with the sport mainly dominated by men at that time, in the 1940s and 50s. She challenged male wrestlers, promising to marry anyone who beat her.
