After nearly 12 years, the rare Neelakurinji flowers have begun blooming in large numbers across the Korandakadu and Chokramudi hills near Mattupetty in Munnar, Kerala. The flowering was first observed in the Devikulam Forest Range of Idukki on August 24 and is expected to spread further across the high-altitude slopes through September. The purplish-blue blooms of Strobilanthes kunthiana, known for their 12-year flowering cycle, are closely associated with the Nilgiris, or Blue Mountains, and have renewed attention on the conservation of the species.
