A magnitude 7.0 earthquake early on Sunday, August 18, triggered a powerful eruption of the Shiveluch volcano in Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula. The eruption sent a massive column of smoke and ash into the air, with images revealing ash emissions and lava flows. Lightning discharges were also visible, adding to the dramatic scene. Tremors from the quake were felt along the coast, including in the region’s capital, Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, according to the United States Geological Survey.
