Defending champions India enter the 11th and final round of the 46th Chess Olympiad in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, still firmly in the hunt to retain their titles across both sections, though their fate no longer rests entirely in their own hands. Following round 10, the Indian men's team sits second in the Open section on 17 match points, trailing leaders Uzbekistan by a single point. Meanwhile, the Indian women's team occupies third place on 16 points, trailing leaders China (18 points) and second-placed Kazakhstan (17 points). Pakistan Forfeits Opening Match Against Israel at FIDE Chess Olympiad 2026 in Samarkand.

The Gold Medal Equation for Open Section

In the Open section, India currently sits in second place with 17 match points, trailing leaders Uzbekistan, who have accumulated 18 match points. The Indian Open team, spearheaded by talents like R Praggnanandhaa, Arjun Erigaisi, Nihal Sarin, World Championship Challenger D Gukesh, and Vidit Gujrathi, will face Hungary in their decisive final round match.

To secure the gold medal, India must win their match against Hungary, which would bring their total to 19 match points. Their fate then hinges on the performance of current leaders Uzbekistan. If Uzbekistan fails to win their final round match (either draws or loses), and tie-break criteria favor India, the coveted Hamilton-Russell Cup could return home. A draw for Uzbekistan would bring both teams level on 19 points, triggering the Olympiad tiebreak system (Olympiad-Sonneborn-Berger tiebreak scores), where India's strong game-point margin could prove decisive. Other strong contenders like Germany, Ukraine, and Hungary are also in the mix with 16 points, making the final standings highly unpredictable.

Women's Team: A Fight for the Top

The Indian Women's team, top-seeded in the tournament and led by the formidable Koneru Humpy, Vaishali Rameshbabu, Divya Deshmukh, Vantika Agrawal, and Savitha Shri B, are in third place with 16 match points heading into the final round. China leads the Women's section with 18 match points, followed by Kazakhstan in second with 17 points.

India's Women's team will battle Georgia in their final round encounter. India's women’s team fought to a hard-earned 2–2 draw against leaders China in round 10, courtesy of a vital win by teenage talent Savitha Shri B. The path to women's gold is narrow and requires results elsewhere to align:

  1. Mandatory Victory: India must defeat their round 11 opponents to reach 18 match points.

  2. China Must Lose: Leaders China sit on 18 points and need to lose their final round to remain tied at 18.

  3. Kazakhstan Must Stumble: Second-placed Kazakhstan (17 points) must either draw or lose. If Kazakhstan win, they would reach 19 points and take the gold outright.

  4. Tiebreak Criteria: If China lose, Kazakhstan drop points, and India win, India and China would finish level on 18 points, with the gold decided via tiebreak calculations.  Where To Watch FIDE Chess Olympiad 2026 Free Live Streaming Online in India.
