California Bear Attack: Couple Mauled and Pet French Bulldog Killed Outside Home in Trinity County

A Northern California couple is recovering from serious injuries after what they say was a bear attack outside their Trinity County home that also killed their French bulldog. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) confirmed it is investigating the September 19 incident but declined to discuss specifics while the investigation remains active.

The confrontation took place in the early morning hours outside the couple's rural property, CBS News reported. In the early morning hours of September 19, Jeff and Mallory Wilson's dog, Cassie, let out a single bark, prompting Jeff Wilson to go outside and check the backyard of their Trinity County home. When he opened the door, a cinnamon-colored black bear emerged from behind their patio furniture, lunging at him and knocking him to the floor.

The commotion woke his wife, who went outside and was also attacked by the bear, according to a GoFundMe organized by a longtime friend of the married couple. "I think the bear was startled by us just as much as we were startled by it," Wilson later told the news site Redheaded Blackbelt.

Family Pet Intervenes Before Succumbing to Wounds

During the attack, their dog Cassie threw herself between Wilson and the bear, which grabbed the dog in its mouth and started to run away with it, according to reports. The owners got the bear to drop their dog and finally scared it off.

Though badly wounded themselves, the couple rushed their dog to emergency care. The pet underwent surgery to treat multiple wounds, including along her spine but "tragically died two days" after the incident, according to the fundraising page. The page described the pet as "a deeply loved member of their family," adding that she "courageously put herself between him and a bear."

CDFW spokesperson Peter Tira said the agency is still investigating the circumstances surrounding the encounter. Wildlife biologists are assessing the scene and examining local bear activity to evaluate factors that may have drawn the animal toward residential quarters.

Bear attacks on people are rare in California. Black bears are the only bear species currently living in the state, with CDFW estimating a population of about 60,000. Trinity County is a mountainous part of far Northern California west of Redding. It's about 200 miles by road from Sacramento and 260 miles from San Francisco.
