Abhishek Sharma, the explosive left-handed opener, has etched his name in cricketing history, becoming the first player from a full-member nation to hit 69 sixes in T20 Internationals in a single calendar year. The Punjab-born cricketer achieved this monumental feat during the fourth T20I against the West Indies at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium in Hyderabad, going past Suryakumar Yadav's previous record of 68 sixes set in 2022. At 26 years and 40 days old, Sharma's blistering form throughout 2026 has been a highlight, culminating in this extraordinary record. The decisive six, a characteristic hoick over mid-wicket, sent the Hyderabad crowd into a frenzy as it marked a new era in T20I power-hitting.

The Record-Breaking Knock

The historic moment arrived in a crucial phase of India's chase against the West Indies. Sharma, known for his aggressive batting, had already shown glimpses of his formidable touch earlier in the series, including a 69-run blitz off just 30 balls against the same opposition in Indore on October 11, 2026. His ability to combine aggression with control has been a hallmark of his sensational year.

The match, a key fixture in the ongoing bilateral series, saw India looking to consolidate their position. The exact start time for the fourth T20I was 7:00 PM IST on October 14, 2026, at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium.

A New Milestone in Power-Hitting

Suryakumar Yadav's record of 68 sixes in T20 Internationals, established during his remarkable 2022 season, was considered a benchmark for aggressive batting. Yadav had an exceptional year, scoring 1164 runs in 31 matches at a stunning strike rate of 187.43 and was deservingly named the ICC Men's T20I Cricketer of the Year. Sharma's ability to eclipse such a formidable record underscores his rapid ascent in the shortest format of the game.

Sharma has been on a sensational run, consistently delivering powerful performances. While this new record is specific to T20 Internationals, Sharma also holds the distinction of being the first Indian to hit over 100 T20 sixes in a calendar year, achieving a staggering 108 maximums across all T20 formats in 2025. His T20 career statistics further highlight his boundary-hitting prowess, with 'Boundary Aggression' identified as his strongest batting dimension. Abhishek Sharma's Stellar Year and Future Prospects

Having matched Suryakumar's tally of 68 sixes in T20Is across 32 matches earlier in the year, his 69th six today marks a significant personal and national record. With more T20 International matches on the horizon, the southpaw has ample opportunities to further extend his new benchmark. His consistent performances have not only established him as a premier opener for India but also as one of the most exciting talents in global T20 cricket. Sharma's ability to provide explosive starts has become a critical asset for the Indian team, and fans will eagerly anticipate how many more records he can shatter in the coming months.

This achievement solidifies Abhishek Sharma's status as a dominant force in T20 cricket, promising an exciting future for Indian cricket with his audacious and impactful style of play.
