International Cricket Council on January 15, 2020 (Wednesday) acknowledged some of the best individual performances both by the players and the officials during the 2019 ICC Awards. Indian skipper Virat Kohli and limited-overs vice-captain Rohit Sharma were honoured with different accolades. Kohli was awarded the 2019 ICC Spirit of Cricket award while Rohit was deemed as the ICC ODI Player of the Year. Along with these two behemoths, Deepak Chahar was given the T20I Performance of the Year award for his breath-taking spell against Bangladesh in November 2019, where he finished with the figures of 6/7 in a spell 3.2 overs. The Board of Cricket Control for India (BCCI) shared a video where the award winners gave their reactions after being recognised for their performances in the past year. ‘The ICC 2019 awardees give their reactions to the awards.’ BCCI captioned their tweet. India’s ODI and T20I vice-captain Rohit Sharma said, ‘It’s a very prestigious award and it is great when your performances are recognized in that fashion and we are happy on how we (India) performed in 2019’. Skipper Virat Kohli reminded everyone about the ‘spirit of cricket’ as he reflected on the 2019 World Cup incident when he stopped some fans from booing Steve Smith. ‘Booing someone is not in the spirit of any sport and I don’t endorse it’ said the No 1 ranked ODI and Test batsman. ICC also released their Test team of the year which featured five Australians, three Kiwis, two Indians and one Englishman. Virat Kohli was named as the captain of the eleven with Mayank Agarwal securing the openers spot.
