England drafted India by 31 runs in the first Test to take a 1-0 lead in the five-match series. The home side bundled out India for 162 in their second innings. India were chasing a target of 194 runs. Ben Stokes emerged star for England on day four as he removed dangerous Virat Kohli apart from Hardik Pandya and Mohammed Shami on day four.

Pandya was the last Indian wicket to fell after he was caught in the sips. At one point in time, it looked like India will pull things when Kohli was batting along with Pandya. India started the day needing 84 more runs to win. However, India lost Dinesh Karthik early on and that opened the gates for England.

After Karthik’s departure, Kohli and Pandya tried to bring stability to India’s innings and added 29 runs for the seventh wicket. Stokes then removed Kohli and Shami in one over to turn the tide completely in favour of England. Needing two more wickets to complete the win, spinner Adil Rashid sent back Ishant Sharma and then Stokes had Pandya caught in the slips.  Ind vs Eng 1st Test Full Scorecard.

It was a dejected performance by the Indian batsmen. Barring Kohli, no other batsman made a significant contribution. The India captain scored 149 in the first innings and then 51 in the second. The second Test now takes at Lord’s and begins from August 09.
