New Delhi, June 23: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday congratulated India's women's hockey team for winning the Women's FIH Series Finals hockey tournament. The Prime Minister, in his congratulatory message on Twitter, wrote that the win will help "popularise" hockey further in India and motivate girls to take up the sport and do well in it.

India won the women's FIH Series Finals hockey tournament by beating hosts Japan 3-1 in the finals held in Japan on Sunday. "Exceptional game, excellent outcome! Congratulations to our team for winning the Women's FIH Series Finals hockey tournament," said PM Modi in his message.

The Japan women hockey team are the Asian champions and The Indian women team played out of their skin to register a win over the Asian champions at the Hiroshima Hockey Stadium.

Gurjit Kaur struck twice (45th and 60th minutes) late in the match to help India win the match after Captain Rani Rampal gave India the lead in the 3rd minute. Japan could put only one across the net as Kanon Mori scored for Japan in the 11th minute. The Indian women's team are already into the final round of the 2020 Olympics qualifiers and the victory over Japan is the cherry on the cake. (With Agency Inputs)
