Bengaluru, January 11: Meta has rejected claims of a large-scale Instagram data breach, asserting that its systems remain secure and that the 17 million accounts cited in circulating claims were not compromised. Addressing concerns over alleged data exposure, Instagram said it had conducted an internal investigation and found no evidence of unauthorised access to its systems. The company clarified that the information being discussed online does not stem from a new security incident.

“We have found no evidence that our systems have been compromised,” a Meta spokesperson said in a statement to Hindustan Times. “The data referenced appears to be either publicly available information or older data collected outside of our platforms.” Instagram Data Breach: Security Breach Exposes Personal Data of 17.5 Million Accounts; Users Receive ‘Password Reset’ Emails.

Instagram Confirms Account Safety

Instagram also addressed user concerns directly through a post on X, stating that the accounts mentioned in the reports remain secure and that no fresh breach had occurred.

“We fixed an issue that let an external party request password reset emails for some people. There was no breach of our systems and your Instagram accounts are secure,” the company posted on X. It further added “You can ignore those emails — sorry for any confusion.” Instagram Caps Hashtags at Five Per Post in New Policy Shift Amidst Head of Instagram, Mosseri's 'Myth' Claims.

Meta Denies Instagram Data Breach Report

Meta explained that its security infrastructure is designed to identify and block attempts to collect user information at scale, adding that no vulnerabilities were found within Instagram’s internal systems.

Context and User Advisory

The clarification comes amid a surge in user complaints about unexpected password reset emails, which triggered concerns of a large-scale data leak. Meta emphasised that while no action is required from users at this time, it continues to invest heavily in security to protect its platforms.

Cybersecurity best practices, including enabling two-factor authentication and using strong, unique passwords, remain recommended safeguards for all users.

“Protecting user privacy is a top priority,” the company said, adding that its security teams are working continuously to mitigate emerging risks. For now, Meta maintains that Instagram users are not impacted by any new data breach, and that the platform remains secure.
