Ninja Theory employees have begun publicly confirming redundancies and roles at risk at the Cambridge-based game developer, raising fresh concerns about the studio’s future and the development of its upcoming Senua game.
Ninja Theory employees have begun publicly confirming redundancies and roles at risk at the Cambridge-based game developer, raising fresh concerns about the studio’s future and the development of its upcoming Senua game.
Several employees have taken to LinkedIn to reveal that they have either lost their jobs or entered redundancy consultations. Those affected reportedly include gameplay programmers, technical specialists, sound designers and technical artists.
Among them is gameplay programmer Katrin Mair, who described the situation as particularly difficult because the team may not be able to complete the work it has been developing. Mair said it was sad knowing that ‘we won’t get to finish what we were working on’. US Bank Layoffs: Why 80 Indian Employees Laid Off in Five-Minute Google Meet Call.
The latest developments come after a turbulent period for Ninja Theory and Microsoft’s Xbox division. Microsoft announced a major restructuring in July that involved roughly 3,200 job losses across the business. Ninja Theory was initially expected to avoid the worst of the cuts after Xbox CEO Asha Sharma said the studio had agreed terms to move to new ownership and would retain funding to complete its next game. However, the proposed deal later fell through. In September, Xbox Game Studios CEO Matt Booty reportedly informed staff that two potential arrangements involving Ninja Theory had failed. Microsoft subsequently began consultations over a possible closure while continuing to explore alternatives for the developer.
Microsoft has not announced a final decision to shut Ninja Theory, and the company has not disclosed the exact number of employees affected by the current redundancy process. A consultation over a potential closure does not necessarily mean that the studio will ultimately be shut down.
The situation has also cast uncertainty over Senua, the next game in Ninja Theory’s Hellblade franchise. The project was unveiled at the Xbox Games Showcase in June and is currently planned for release in 2027 for PC, Xbox and PlayStation 5. Microsoft has not announced that the game has been cancelled.
Ninja Theory previously released Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II in May 2024. The game received strong critical praise, particularly for its visuals, sound and presentation, although reports indicated that its commercial performance was relatively modest.
With employees now publicly confirming redundancies, the future of Ninja Theory and the development timeline for Senua remain uncertain. Further clarity could depend on Microsoft’s ongoing restructuring decisions and its plans for the Cambridge studio.
