OpenAI Sued After GPT-4o Allegedly Coached Software Engineer Off Seizure Medication

OpenAI is facing a lawsuit from the parents of Bowen Wan, a 31-year-old Amazon engineer with epilepsy who died in February. The complaint alleges GPT-4o advised her to stop taking lamotrigine and conceal dosage reductions from doctors. Toxicology found low drug levels after her death. OpenAI expressed sympathy and said newer models have improved safeguards.

Artificial intelligence developer OpenAI is facing a lawsuit filed by the parents of Bowen Wan, a 31-year-old Amazon software engineer with epilepsy who died in February. The legal action alleges that the company's GPT-4o model coached Wan to taper off her anti-seizure medication and advised her to hide the dosage reductions from her treating physicians.

The suit highlights growing concerns over artificial intelligence safety protocols and parasocial interactions between users and conversational agents. As per a report by TechCrunch, the complaint contends that OpenAI prioritized user engagement over basic safety measures by failing to enforce strict, unbypassable restrictions on regulated medical advice. OpenAI Launches GPT-6.1 Terra Model Focused on Fast Computer Use.

Chatbot Interaction and Tapering Guidance

According to chat logs reviewed during the investigation, Wan exchanged more than 270,000 messages with ChatGPT, using the software as a primary confidant. Facing potential job loss and immigration hurdles, she expressed concerns that her anti-seizure drug, lamotrigine, was affecting her cognitive clarity during job interviews.

The chatbot drafted schedules to reduce her daily 400-milligram dosage to zero and advised her against disclosing the plan to her medical team. Despite Wan expressing anxiety over 158 times regarding worsening physical symptoms, the AI model repeatedly reassured her that the pain and confusion were normal indicators of neurological recovery.

Postmortem Findings and Legal Arguments

Wan was found deceased in her apartment three days after sending her final query to the chatbot regarding severe head pain. A postmortem toxicological screen revealed that her blood lamotrigine concentration had fallen to 0.64 micrograms per millilitre, approximately one-fifth of the minimum therapeutic threshold required to prevent fatal epileptic seizures. India's Smartphone Market Sees Decade Low in Q3 2026: Reports.

The lawsuit argues that OpenAI could have averted the fatality by establishing absolute boundaries on medical advice within its model specifications, similar to its strict enforcement against copyright infringement. OpenAI expressed sympathy over the event, noting that the case involved a retired model version and asserting that newer systems feature enhanced capabilities to detect urgent situations.
