Qualcomm Price Hike: Chipmaker Officially Announces Broad Price Increases Amid Component Shortages
Qualcomm reports Q3 results meeting revenue estimates but issues light guidance due to component shortages. The chipmaker confirms broad price hikes starting September 1 to combat rising memory and manufacturing costs, even as its automotive segment posts strong double-digit growth.
Semiconductor giant Qualcomm has announced its fiscal third-quarter financial results, meeting analyst revenue estimates while providing light guidance for the upcoming quarter due to ongoing supply chain pressures and soaring memory component costs. In response to rising manufacturing inputs, the company has confirmed plans to implement broad price increases across its chip portfolio starting September 1.
As per a CNBC report, Qualcomm reported adjusted earnings per share of USD 2.21 on revenue of USD 9.95 billion for the period ending June 28. While total revenues remained relatively healthy, the company's core handset chip sales declined by 20% year-over-year to USD 5.1 billion, reflecting affordability challenges and a shifting consumer preference toward lower-end premium devices and older hardware models. Supply Pressures And Price Revisions
Addressing financial analysts, Chief Executive Officer Cristiano Amon noted that general cost increases across wafer fabrication, packaging, and memory materials have impacted margins. To counteract these temporary short-term market dynamics, Qualcomm is taking concrete steps to streamline supply chains and adjust product pricing globally.
The upcoming price adjustments affect chips primarily supplied to smartphone manufacturers. Industry observers point out that surging global demand for DRAM and NAND components driven by artificial intelligence datacentres has squeezed component inventories, leaving major hardware makers vulnerable to rising production overheads.
Automotive Growth And Diversification Strategy
Despite headwinds in the mobile sector, Qualcomm experienced strong performance in its automotive division, which generated USD 1.59 billion in sales. The company recently secured a high-profile chip supply agreement with BMW for digital cockpit systems, supporting its long-term objective of reaching USD 10 billion in automotive revenue by 2029.
