Rocket Lab has successfully launched a dedicated Earth-observing radar satellite for the Japanese commercial space venture Synspective. The mission, officially named "Viva La Strix", involved an Electron rocket lifting off from Rocket Lab's primary Launch Complex 1 situated on the Mahia Peninsula in New Zealand at 9:33 p.m. local time on Friday.

Rocket Lab Synspective Constellation Partnership
The Tokyo-based aerospace company is currently building out a comprehensive synthetic aperture radar imaging constellation. The orbital network is engineered to generate highly accurate spatial data used by urban development planners, construction managers, civil infrastructure monitoring groups, and emergency services coordinating localized disaster response efforts over Japan.
Synthetic aperture radar technology enables these specialised satellites to peer directly through heavy cloud cover and track surface changes under all lighting conditions, including complete darkness. The operational capability inspired the nomenclature of the spacecraft, with Synspective naming the series Strix, a widespread biological genus of owls known for nocturnal vision.

The "Viva La Strix" operation marks the ninth dedicated orbital mission that the California-headquartered launch provider has successfully managed for Synspective since their commercial partnership began in 2020. The two aerospace firms have established a long-term contractual agreement, with another 18 dedicated Electron missions booked to deliver the remaining components of the constellation to orbit before 2030.
The flight represents the 88th launch milestone for the Electron vehicle since its initial test flight debuted in May 2017.
