A discarded upper stage of a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket is believed to have crashed into the Moon after drifting through space for more than a year, marking one of the rare instances of an unintended human-made object striking the lunar surface. Scientists say the impact poses no risk to Earth and could provide valuable insights into lunar geology and the effects of high-speed collisions, according to a report.

The roughly four-metric-ton rocket stage, about the size of a school bus, was launched in January 2025 to carry Firefly Aerospace's Blue Ghost lunar lander. Impact Expected on Moon's Far Side

Travelling at around 8,700 kmph (5,400 mph), the rocket is believed to have struck the Moon near the Einstein Crater on its far western limb. Because the impact site is not directly visible from Earth, immediate confirmation is not possible. Scientists expect to verify the collision later using images from lunar orbiters and ground-based telescopes.

Growing Focus on Space Debris

Researchers say accidental lunar impacts remain uncommon but are becoming more likely as the number of deep-space missions increases. Previous incidents include an unintended Chinese rocket impact in 2022, while NASA has intentionally crashed spacecraft into the Moon in past missions for scientific research.

The latest event is expected to help scientists study the plume of lunar dust created by the impact and improve future tracking and management of space debris as lunar exploration accelerates under programmes such as NASA's Artemis missions.
