Sony Physical Disc Exit Driven by Economic Factors, Says Former PlayStation Boss Shawn Layden
Former PlayStation Studios boss Shawn Layden has commented on Sony’s move away from physical game discs, describing it as an economic decision driven by the dominance of digital sales. He noted that the shift is a logical response to market trends rather than concerns over used games.
Former PlayStation Studios head Shawn Layden has described Sony’s reported move to phase out physical game discs as a significant decision driven primarily by economic factors. Speaking on the evolution of the gaming market, Layden suggested that the decline of physical media is an inevitable consequence of shifting consumer habits and the rising operational costs associated with manufacturing and distribution.
As per a report by Times of India, Layden noted that while the decision is dramatic, it aligns with long-standing internal discussions at Sony regarding the dominance of digital distribution. He explained that companies often make these choices based on simple spreadsheet analysis, questioning the incentive to maintain expensive infrastructure for a dwindling segment of the market. GTA 6 Viral Contract: Man Asks Girlfriend To Sign ‘No Interruptions’ Agreement Before Launch.
Shawn Layden The Economics of Digital Transition
Layden highlighted that digital sales growth was initially slow but accelerated sharply during the COVID-19 pandemic, which permanently altered consumer behaviour. He noted that there is a "tipping point" where the cost of maintaining physical retail support outweighs the revenue generated by the remaining disc-buying audience. If digital platforms account for the vast majority of revenue, sustaining physical production for a small fraction of the business becomes economically impractical.
While he acknowledged that physical media still serves specific groups, such as users in regions with limited broadband connectivity or those on military bases, he suggested that market leaders like Sony often prioritise the majority shift. Layden also observed that once a market leader makes a transition of this magnitude, it inevitably influences the wider gaming industry, potentially setting a precedent for other console manufacturers to follow.
The Decline of the Second-Hand Market
Addressing common theories regarding the move, Layden dismissed the idea that concerns over second-hand game sales were a primary driver for the discontinuation of discs. He noted that while the used game business was once a significant factor in the industry, the rise of digital distribution has effectively reduced its importance. GTA 6 Physical Edition Debate Sparks Domino’s UK Joke About ‘Digital Pizzas’.
The growth of digital storefronts has made it difficult for secondary market retailers to maintain their business models. Consequently, Sony’s focus remains firmly on the scalability of digital delivery. As the industry moves further away from physical media, Layden believes this transition is now a natural progression, reflecting a market that has largely moved beyond the need for disc-based software.
