Sony To End PlayStation Game Discs From 2028: What It Means for Digital Ownership and Gamers

Sony has announced that all new PlayStation games released from January 2028 will be available only in digital format, marking the end of physical game discs for future titles. Sony said production of physical discs for all new PlayStation games will end in January 2028. After the stores close, users will no longer be able to purchase new games or content for those platforms. However, Sony said players will still be able to download previously purchased content "for the foreseeable future." The transition has drawn attention to the difference between owning a physical copy of a game and purchasing a digital version.

When players buy a game on disc, they own the physical copy, which they can typically keep, lend or resell, subject to local laws. By contrast, digital purchases generally provide users with a licence to access and use the game under the platform's terms of service rather than ownership of the software itself.

This means continued access to digital games depends on the platform and associated services remaining available. Sony has said previously purchased content will remain downloadable after the PS3 and PS Vita store closures, but future access ultimately depends on ongoing platform support.
