Anand, July 13: The United States labour market has experienced significant volatility in the first half of 2026, with 443,600 job cuts announced across all industries between January and June. Although this figure represents a 43% decline compared to the historic highs recorded during the same period in 2025, the technology sector has faced a different trend, with staff reductions rising sharply.

Technology Sector Leads Layoffs

The technology industry has emerged as the most heavily affected sector this year, cutting 123,653 positions during the first six months. As per a report by The Times of India, this represents a 66% increase in layoffs compared to the same timeframe in 2025. Artificial intelligence is increasingly cited as the primary driver behind these workforce reductions, marking three consecutive months where AI integration has been the top justification for job losses.

The Impact of AI on Workforce Trends

The influence of AI on employment is substantial, accounting for 22% of all job cuts this year. May 2026 was identified as the most severe month for tech personnel, with 38,242 roles eliminated in that sector alone as part of broader corporate restructuring efforts. While firms argue that AI will eventually enhance long-term productivity, the current transition is resulting in significant displacement of white-collar roles.

Weak Hiring Amid Industry Restructuring

Despite the ongoing layoffs, hiring momentum remains historically low, with only 80,472 planned hires announced through May. This imbalance underscores the challenges workers face as various industries restructure their operations to prioritise automation and AI efficiency. Analysts observe that the shift toward AI is not merely an operational change but a fundamental reorganisation of the labour market that continues to limit new employment opportunities.
