Supercars and other vehicles worth about USD 10 million were seized by London’s Metropolitan Police during a weekend operation targeting antisocial, dangerous and uninsured driving in central London. A total of 90 vehicles were taken across Kensington, Chelsea and Hyde Park, making it the largest such operation by both vehicle count and value in the five years since the crackdown began.
Among the vehicles seized was a Ferrari Monza SP2 valued at about 3.7 million Pounds, or nearly USD 5 million, BBC reported. The limited-edition Ferrari was one of only 499 built and had been in the UK for just one day when officers stopped it. Ferrari Monza SP2 Among Vehicles Seized
The Ferrari Monza SP2 was one of the most valuable vehicles caught up in the operation. The Met said the car was stopped in central London after officers identified driving-related offences. The driver had a provisional licence, which is intended for learners, and did not have insurance.
A Monza SP2 sold at auction for 3.7 million Pounds (USD 4.9 million) earlier this year, highlighting the value of the vehicle seized during the operation. The model is one of 499 examples produced by Ferrari. 90 Vehicles Taken During Weekend Operation
The Metropolitan Police said officers seized 90 vehicles between Friday and Sunday across Kensington, Chelsea and Hyde Park. The vehicles had a combined value of more than 8 million Pounds, with the force describing the total number and value of seizures as the highest recorded during the five-year operation.
Fifteen vehicles were seized under powers that allow officers to take immediate action when a vehicle has been used antisocially, rather than issuing a warning first. The powers were introduced this year as part of efforts to tackle dangerous and disruptive driving.
Police Target Dangerous and Antisocial Driving
Authorities in England consider antisocial driving to include unnecessary noise pollution, street racing and cruising in a convoy, among other forms of public nuisance. Central London’s affluent neighborhoods often attract owners of expensive and exotic cars, particularly during the summer months. Groups of vehicles can gather in the area, while residents have complained about excessive engine noise and other disruptive driving.
Special Ch Insp Geoff Tatman, who led the operation, said: "We regularly hear from local people who are fed up with people driving cars dangerously in the area, or with modifications which make them a nuisance to those who live nearby." He said seizing vehicles was intended to keep roads safe and deter dangerous driving.
In a separate statement, Caroline Sargent, a lawmaker at Westminster City Council, said: "The disruption caused by these reckless drivers and boy racers is often worse during the summer months and, as well as putting people at risk, causes significant nuisance for residents and businesses."
Arrests Made During Operation
The weekend operation also resulted in several arrests.PoundsOfficers arrested a man on suspicion of handling stolen goods and money laundering after finding 19 bank cards in other people's names and more than 2,500 Pounds in cash, the Met said.
A second man, stopped on suspicion of driving without insurance, was arrested on suspicion of possessing drugs with intent to supply.
Two further arrests were made, one on suspicion of using words or behaviour likely to cause harassment, alarm or distress, and one on suspicion of an immigration offence. The arrests formed part of the wider enforcement operation across central London.
Record Number and Value of Vehicles Seized
The Met said the number and value of vehicles seized was the highest in the five years the operation has run. The latest crackdown reflects increased police powers to seize vehicles being used in antisocial behaviour rather than giving motorists a warning.
Special Chief Inspector Geoff Tatman said, "Through operations like this, we're arresting these drivers and seizing their cars so we can keep our roads safe." Police said the operation was aimed at protecting residents and businesses while deterring dangerous and disruptive driving on London’s roads.
