A former resident doctor has pleaded not guilty to 45 counts of s*xual assault allegedly committed against dozens of hospital patients under his care, including young children. Nathaniel Spencer, 39, entered his pleas at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court following a multi-year police investigation into his conduct across two West Midlands NHS trusts. The trial has been scheduled to take place late next year.

Details of the Allegations

The prosecution alleges that Spencer assaulted 38 female patients between 2017 and 2021. The offences are reported to have occurred while he was working at the Royal Stoke University Hospital and Russells Hall Hospital in Dudley. Hardeep Singh Kohli Denies 20 S*xual Offence Charges; Trial Set for October 1, 2027.

According to court disclosures, the full list of charges brought against the former doctor includes:

  • 15 counts of s*xual assault
  • 17 counts of assault by penetration
  • Nine counts of s*xual assault of a child under the age of 13
  • Three counts of assaulting a child under 13 by penetration
  • One count of attempted assault by penetration

The court clerk took nearly 15 minutes to read the extensive indictment, with prosecutors noting that the youngest alleged victims were aged six and seven at the time of the incidents. Staffordshire Police initiated a complex inquiry into Spencer’s clinical placements following reports of misconduct. Spencer previously practised as a resident doctor with The Dudley Group NHS Foundation Trust. Following the initiation of the police inquiry, both affected NHS trusts established dedicated patient helplines, and the General Medical Council (GMC) suspended Spencer from medical practice pending the outcome of the criminal proceedings.

Next Steps in Legal Proceedings

Judge Graeme Smith renewed Spencer's conditional bail following his entries of not guilty. His current bail terms strictly prohibit him from taking employment within the NHS or clinical settings, and restrict him from unsupervised contact with female children. The case has been adjourned for a further preparatory hearing at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court on February 8 next year. Due to the scale of the case, the full trial is scheduled to begin at Loughborough Crown Court in October next year.
