US President Donald Trump shared a roughly 90 second AI generated video on Thursday that depicts him as a doctor treating Hollywood celebrities for what he calls "Trump Derangement Syndrome." The clip, posted to Truth Social and later on X, features deepfake versions of prominent critics including Whoopi Goldberg, Rosie O'Donnell, Robert De Niro, Julia Roberts, Edward Norton and John Leguizamo.
What The Video Shows
The video opens with an AI generated Trump dressed in a white lab coat labelled "Donald J. Trump, MD," complete with a stethoscope. A deepfake voice mimicking the president asks viewers whether they or someone they know has been diagnosed with TDS, describing the symptoms as relentless before introducing himself as "Doctor Trump" with a treatment plan. The clip then cuts to fabricated testimonials from celebrity "patients." The AI version of De Niro claims he could not eat or sleep and was constantly angry, while an AI O'Donnell says she has been suffering for over a decade. After the testimonials, the video returns to the deepfake Trump, who tells viewers to turn off "fake news," say their prayers, and drink a Diet Coke if they feel anxious.
The Term Behind The Joke
"Trump Derangement Syndrome" is a phrase Trump has used for years to describe what he characterises as an irrational hostility toward him among his critics. He has previously suggested, speaking from the Oval Office, that he had heard it might actually be a diagnosable condition. The term is an adaptation of "Bush Derangement Syndrome," coined by columnist Charles Krauthammer in 2003 to describe intense reactions to George W Bush's presidency. Several of the celebrities featured in the video have been vocal Trump critics in real life. De Niro has previously called Trump an existential threat to American freedoms and security, while Goldberg said during the 2024 campaign that he wanted to be a dictator for life. O'Donnell and Trump have feuded publicly for two decades, and Roberts narrated a voter outreach ad for Kamala Harris during the 2024 election.
Part Of A Wider Pattern
This is not the first time Trump's medical imagery has drawn attention. Earlier this year, he posted an AI generated image depicting himself as Jesus Christ with glowing healing hands, which triggered backlash even from some supporters and Republican officials before he deleted it. He followed that up days later with another AI image showing him embraced by Jesus in front of an American flag.
The president has also shared other AI generated content in recent months, including images of himself and cabinet members swimming in the renovated Lincoln Memorial reflecting pool, and a caricature involving former President Barack Obama and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
Trump's health has faced separate scrutiny in recent months. He was examined by 22 doctors and specialists in May for his third annual physical in just over a year, and has undergone repeated cognitive tests, which he says he has passed. The White House has attributed his visibly swollen ankles to chronic venous insufficiency and bruising on his hand to aspirin use and frequent handshaking, maintaining that the president is otherwise in good health.
