Three teenage girls have been arrested in connection with an acid attack in Jersey City, New Jersey, that left six women with burn injuries, authorities said. The suspects, aged 13, 14, and 15, are accused of carrying out a targeted drive-by attack in which sulfuric acid was allegedly thrown at the victims from a moped while they were inside a car on Wilkinson Avenue.
The female trio has been charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon causing bodily injury, among other offenses. Officials said the investigation remains ongoing as authorities continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the June 15 incident.
Attack Left Six Women Injured
The group, including three teens, was in their car when they allegedly had sulfuric acid hurled on them by people on a moped in a cowardly drive-by attack in Jersey City, according to officials. All six victims were rushed to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, including "skin burns and peeling," Scalcione told NBC News. One of the victims, a 21-year-old, was "treated for second-degree burns to her face and scalp," she added.
Police Say Attack May Have Been Targeted
The incident appeared targeted and “may have stemmed from an earlier dispute among a large group,” Kim Wallace Scalcione, a spokesperson for the city's Department of Public Safety, told Hudson County View. Authorities have not released additional details about the alleged dispute or whether further arrests are expected.
Arrests Announced Weeks After Incident
The arrests were announced Tuesday, July 14, almost a month after the shocking June 15 attack on Wilkinson Avenue. However, the teens were arrested following the incident on June 16 and 17, Scalcione told The Post. The investigation is ongoing.
