A 17-year-old Indian-origin teenager, Arjun Aravind, has been arrested and charged with the murder of his mother and 14-year-old brother inside their suburban home in Acton, Massachusetts. The victims were identified as 45-year-old Sudha Venkatesan and her 14-year-old son, Siddharth Aravind. Police discovered their bodies at the family's Martha Lane home on Tuesday evening after a tutor arrived for an appointment and found the house locked, NDTV reported.
The tutor contacted Arjun's father, who was unable to reach his family and subsequently requested a police welfare check. Officers found Venkatesan in the basement and Siddharth on the first floor. Both had suffered visible trauma, authorities said. The exact cause and manner of death have not yet been released by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. Teen Arrested After Overnight Search
Aravind was initially missing from the home, along with his mother's Honda Accord. Authorities issued an alert for the vehicle as officers searched for him.
He was located early Wednesday in Wayland after police responding to an unrelated alarm found him inside the vehicle. He was taken into custody without incident, and authorities later said there was no continuing threat to public safety. Aravind faces two murder counts along with charges including assault and battery on a household or family member, assault and battery, unauthorized use of a vehicle and motor vehicle theft.
What Investigators Say About ChatGPT Use
Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan said investigators found evidence that Aravind had recently displayed concerning behaviour, including using the internet and ChatGPT to explore theoretical ideas or fantasy stories about killing his family. According to the district attorney's office, the teenager appeared to be developing "Gothic novel"-style stories, using AI to create characters and ask questions about scenarios involving threats to his family. Authorities have not said that the alleged ChatGPT activity itself caused or directly led to the killings. The investigation into the motive and circumstances remains ongoing.
Court Proceedings
Aravind was scheduled to face proceedings related to the vehicle charges in juvenile court, while the murder and assault charges were expected to be addressed in Concord District Court. The investigation remains active as authorities await the medical examiner's findings and continue examining the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
The case has also drawn attention to how investigators are examining a teenager's online activity as part of a homicide investigation, although officials have not established a direct causal connection between the alleged AI interactions and the killings.
