A fresh weather winter storm warning has been issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) for parts of Idaho, Montana and Wyoming, with forecasters warning of heavy snowfall, strong winds and dangerous travel conditions through Monday night.
The storm arrives just days before the US Independence Day celebrations, prompting officials to urge residents and visitors to postpone travel across backcountry routes and higher elevations if possible. Those who must travel are advised to carry a winter emergency kit with tire chains, blankets, extra clothing, water, a flashlight, a shovel and a first aid kit.
Up to 3 Feet of Snow Expected
Montana is expected to receive the heaviest snowfall, with the Georgetown Lake region forecast to receive as much as 3 feet of heavy, wet snow between Saturday night and Tuesday. Officials warned that the snow, combined with cold temperatures and gusty winds, could increase the risk of hypothermia and bring down trees, blocking remote roads. In Idaho, the 4th of July Peak area could receive around 12 inches of snow over the next three days, while Wyoming's Pitchstone Plateau is expected to see up to 8 inches.
Snowfall near the Beartooth Mountains along the Montana-Wyoming border may briefly ease on Sunday afternoon before redeveloping Sunday night and continuing into Monday and Tuesday morning.
Strong Winds Add to Hazard
The storm is also expected to bring powerful winds across north-central Montana.
