A 17-year-old Indian-origin teenager has been charged with the murders of his mother, Sudha Venkatesan, and younger brother, Siddharth Aravind, at their suburban home in Acton, Massachusetts. Authorities allege the teen, identified as Arjun Aravind, fatally assaulted his family members before fleeing the scene in his mother's car. Investigators have revealed that Aravind had recently demonstrated "concerning behaviour", including using ChatGPT to research theoretical ideas and create fantasy narratives about killing his family.

The tragic incident came to light on the evening of August 11, after the teen's father contacted police, reporting that he had been unable to reach his family. A tutor scheduled to visit the home earlier that day had also been unable to make contact with anyone inside. In a statement on X (formerly Twitter), Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan said that Arjun Aravind has been charged with murder in connection with the deaths of his family members. US: Indian-Origin Teen Charged With Killing Mother and Brother in Massachusetts.

Who Is Arjun Aravind?

Arjun Aravind is a 17-year-old resident of Acton, a suburb located approximately 48 kilometres from Boston. According to Acton Police Chief Douglas Sturniolo, Aravind was previously known to local law enforcement, having been reported as a runaway at one point last year, reports CBS News.

Following the discovery of the crime, he was apprehended by police in Wayland, Massachusetts, early Wednesday morning, August 12, after being found inside his mother’s Honda Accord in a parking lot.

The Discovery and Investigation

Upon entering the residence on Martha Lane on Tuesday evening, police discovered the bodies of 45-year-old Sudha Venkatesan and 14-year-old Siddharth Aravind. According to Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan, Siddharth was found on the first floor, while his mother, Sudha, was discovered in the finished basement. Both victims suffered "obvious trauma", though the Chief Medical Examiner has yet to determine the exact cause of death or confirm the weapon used. Authorities believe the murders occurred within a window of time after the father left for work on Tuesday morning and before the welfare check was conducted in the evening.

"The subsequent investigation indicates that Arjun had recently been demonstrating concerning behaviour, including using the internet and ChatGPT to make searches for theoretical ideas or fantasies regarding killing his family," a statement by the Middlesex County District Attorney’s Office said.
