May 29 marks the International Day of UN Peacekeepers. This year’s theme, “Protecting Civilians, Protecting Peace,” coincides with the 20th anniversary of the “…first time the Security Council explicitly mandated a peacekeeping mission in Sierra Leone to protect civilians.” But today, the central component of the UN, peacekeeping, is under attack as countries cut their contributions to the United Nations.
