This day commemorates the anniversary of the formation of the Malaysian Federation in 1963. Malaysia Day is thus celebrated on September 16 every year to mark the same date in 1963. This day is also called ‘Hari Malaysia’ and it was not recognised as an official holiday till 2010. While Malaysia celebrates its Independence Day on August 31, this day is also a national celebration to commemorate the joining of East Malaysia with the Federation of Malaya.
