Tipu Sultan Jayanti, which celebrates the birth anniversary of former Mysuru or Mysore ruler is being observed on November 20. While Tipu Sultan is venerated as a king who fought the British colonial forces to protect his kingdom, he is also accused of atrocities by the Hindu right wing groups. Tipu Sultan is hailed as a freedom fighter by some. Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa recently said that the state government will strike off references to Tipu Sultan from history textbooks taught in schools.
