Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto on Tuesday conferred the country’s highest civilian honour, the "Bintang Adipurna of the Republic of Indonesia" (Star of the Republic of Indonesia, First Class), upon Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The prestigious medal of honour was presented during a high-profile ceremony at the Istana Merdeka Presidential Palace in Jakarta, marking a major milestone in the diplomatic relationship between the two maritime neighbours.

Prime Minister Modi received the award on the opening day of his official three-day state visit to Indonesia, running from July 6 to 8. The accolade recognizes his exceptional contributions toward strengthening bilateral relations and elevating the ties between New Delhi and Jakarta to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. Accepting the award, Prime Minister Modi expressed his gratitude to President Prabowo and the people of Indonesia, dedicating the honour to the citizens of India and the historic civilizational bonds shared between the two democracies.

The state visit represents the first bilateral exchange between the two heads of government since the formal elevation of their diplomatic ties in 2018, and marks Modi's fourth trip to the Southeast Asian country. The Prime Minister's aircraft was earlier escorted into Indonesian airspace by military fighter jets before he was received by President Prabowo at the Halim Perdanakusuma Air Force Base with a traditional grand ceremonial welcome.

High-level talks between the two leaders focused heavily on intensifying cooperation in defence, maritime security, trade, digital transformation, and food security. Security relations between India and Indonesia have expanded significantly in recent years, underlined by joint military exercises and Indonesia’s recent landmark acquisition of BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles.
