U.S. President Donald Trump expressed confidence on Thursday that the military conflict involving Iran would conclude "pretty soon," assessing that Tehran lacks the capacity to sustain the standoff much longer. Speaking to reporters from the Oval Office, Trump voiced optimism regarding ongoing negotiations surrounding the Strait of Hormuz while reiterating Washington’s stance against Iran acquiring a nuclear weapon.

Trump defended recent U.S. military operations against Iran as a crucial effort to prevent nuclear proliferation, describing the prospect of a nuclear-armed Tehran as catastrophic for global stability. He noted that while the war has disrupted regional security, he anticipates a return to normalcy as hostilies wind down in the near term. Addressing maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz—one of the world's most critical transit chokepoints for global oil supplies—Trump highlighted the presence of a U.S. Navy blockade. While acknowledging that potential naval mines or localized strikes remain a risk for commercial shipping, he indicated that diplomatic discussions regarding passage through the waterway are making progress.

However, officials in Tehran pushed back against Washington’s framing of the situation. Iran’s Acting Defense Minister, Brigadier General Seyed Majid Ibn Reza, stated on Wednesday that Iranian armed forces remain prepared to deliver a "crushing and decisive response" to any military threats from the U.S. or Israel. Reporting through state-affiliated media, Ibn Reza asserted that Iran’s defense apparatus possesses all necessary resources to protect national sovereignty.

Similarly, Iranian Parliament Speaker and top negotiator Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf dismissed recent American diplomatic overtures as "theater diplomacy." In a statement posted on social media, Ghalibaf accused the U.S. of using pressure tactics, unfulfilled pledges, and misinformation to gain leverage, urging Washington to fulfill existing obligations rather than engage in public relations maneuvers. The diplomatic friction follows the collapse of a 14-point Memorandum of Understanding agreed upon in June that was intended to halt active hostilities. Commenting on the standoff earlier, U.S. Vice President JD Vance cautioned that future talks with Tehran would likely remain "messy" and prolonged due to internal divisions within Iranian leadership, though he reaffirmed that the administration would continue applying military, economic, and diplomatic pressure.
