A veteran social worker has had her registration cancelled and has been ordered to pay over $10,000 in costs following a series of sxually explicit social media exchanges with a 16-year-old student. The Social Workers Complaints and Disciplinary Tribunal recently released its decision, censuring the woman after she admitted to sharing intimate photographs and sxual fantasies with the Year 12 boy.

Inappropriate Online Conduct

The social worker, a woman in her 40s with two decades of experience, was employed part-time at an unnamed school in 2023. Her role involved working with students on attendance issues and providing mental health counseling. While she was not specifically assigned to counsel the student involved, the two began communicating after he sent her a friend request on Facebook in June 2023. US Shocker: Married Teacher Admits To Having S*x With 16-Year-Old Boy in School Closet, Bushes in Washington; Arrested.

According to the tribunal findings, the communication quickly escalated. Despite an initial attempt to rebuff the student's advances, the woman eventually engaged in sxually explicit messaging and moved the conversation to Snapchat. For approximately three weeks, the pair exchanged intimate photos and discussed sxual fantasies.

Internal Investigation and Resignation

The relationship came to light in September 2023 after the student’s friends notified the school principal. Following an internal investigation by the school, the social worker resigned from her position. US Shocker: Married Teacher Sent Disturbing Messages to a 17-Year-Old Student Before Having S*x With Him in Washington, Sentenced.

The student told the principal that while they had blocked each other and deleted messages on several occasions, the contact had repeatedly resumed. In her defense to the tribunal, the woman stated she was in a "vulnerable state" at the time and felt it was "easier to give in to his advances than to continue resisting."

Tribunal Findings and Sanctions

The Social Workers Complaints and Disciplinary Tribunal found the woman guilty of professional misconduct. The professional conduct committee highlighted the significant "power imbalance" and the "sustained lack of professional judgment" displayed by an experienced practitioner in a position of trust.

"Her conduct demonstrated a sustained lack of professional judgment in circumstances where she understood that sending a student s*xual messages and photos was entirely inappropriate," the tribunal noted in its decision. While the woman argued she was not a "predator" and was experiencing psychological distress, the tribunal emphasized that the age disparity and professional context made her conduct entirely inappropriate.

Financial Penalties and Suppression

In addition to losing her registration, the woman was ordered to pay a total of $10,674 in costs. This includes $8,077 to the professional conduct committee and $2,597 to the tribunal itself.

To protect the identity of the student and the integrity of the school environment, the tribunal has ordered permanent non-publication of the names of the social worker, the student, and the location of the school. The decision serves as a formal censure, ensuring the woman can no longer practice in a field involving the safety of young people.
