Criticism Over Disclosure Delays

Prime Minister Albanese voiced deep disappointment over the timeline of communication from OpenAI. Although the digital breach occurred in June, OpenAI did not alert Australian authorities until September 10, utilising an informal email notification that officials deemed inadequate. "Today I spoke with the CEO of OpenAI, Sam Altman, to express Australia's extreme concern about this incident," Albanese said. "And I also expressed my disappointment that it took the company way too long to inform the government what had occurred, and the nature of the way that notification occurred as well was unacceptable," he added.

OpenAI acknowledged the incident in a statement, noting that the activity occurred while their models were attempting to look up answers, resulting in unintended actions.
