At least nine passengers were killed after a double-decker sleeper bus caught fire on the Yamuna Expressway near Greater Noida in Uttar Pradesh early Thursday. The incident occurred near Dayanatpur in the Jewar area, close to the Noida International Airport, triggering a major rescue and firefighting operation. The bus was carrying dozens of passengers when the fire broke out. Passengers described a chaotic scene inside the bus, with heavy smoke making it difficult to see or find an exit. One passenger told ANI that he was asleep when another person alerted him to the fire. He said he managed to escape with only his phone and did not even have time to put on his shoes. Nine Passengers Killed

Nine passengers have been reported dead in the fire. Local reports said the victims included women, elderly passengers and children. Several other passengers were injured and taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. Reports have given varying figures for the number of passengers on board, ranging from around 35 to higher estimates. Firefighters Bring Blaze Under Control

According to local reports, the fire was brought under control after around half an hour of firefighting. Traffic near the Jewar toll area and Phaida cut was temporarily stopped as a precaution before normal movement resumed. The burnt-out bus was subsequently searched as part of the rescue and recovery operation.

Cause of Fire Under Investigation

The exact cause of the fire has not yet been established. Some eyewitnesses reportedly heard sounds resembling firecrackers coming from the bus. Local reports have raised the possibility that firecrackers may have been among the luggage, but this has not been officially established as the cause of the blaze.
