Tourist Flight Crashes Near Nazca in Peru
In a statement posted on Facebook, Nazca's municipal government said the aircraft crashed into a field shortly after departing on a sightseeing tour of the Nazca Lines.
The Nazca Lines are a vast network of geoglyphs created centuries ago by Peru's Indigenous inhabitants. The giant figures, which depict animals and geometric shapes, can only be fully appreciated from the air or from designated viewing towers, making scenic flights a popular attraction for visitors.
Victims Included Foreign Tourists
Peru's Ministry for Trade and Tourism said 11 foreign tourists and two crew members were aboard the aircraft. State news agency Agencia Andina reported that the passengers included two German, two Spanish and seven Italian tourists. Authorities have not yet released the identities of the victims pending official procedures.
Aircraft Operated by Aerodiana
According to local authorities, the aircraft belonged to Peruvian airline Aerodiana. On its website, the airline says it has offered sightseeing flights over the Nazca Lines for the past 14 years using Cessna Grand Caravan aircraft. Aerodiana was not immediately available for comment following the crash.
Peruvian authorities said the cause of the accident remains under investigation. Officials have not disclosed what may have led to the crash, and investigators are expected to examine the aircraft, flight operations and other relevant factors as part of the inquiry.
