The developer, Ma Kai, created the software ahead of his move to a different city this September to attend university. Raised by his grandfather, who is in his 70s and lives with underlying health conditions, Ma sought a practical way to ensure the elderly man’s health routine remains uninterrupted while living independently. The application utilizes MiniCPM, an open-source large language model developed by the Beijing-based artificial intelligence firm ModelBest. Ma demonstrated the software during an interview with the Shanghai Morning Post at the World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC) in mid-July.
Although Ma described the initial build as lightweight and simple, the app incorporates safety mechanisms for elderly users. Beyond setting automated dosage schedules, the system allows users to upload photos of medicine packaging. Using visual recognition and AI processing, the app reads expiration dates and displays warnings such as, "The drug has expired. Please do not consume it."
Proper medication management is a common challenge among older adults managing chronic conditions like hypertension, diabetes, or heart disease. Missed doses, duplicate consumption, or taking expired drugs can trigger acute health complications, making daily adherence tools increasingly vital in aging populations. Reports of Ma’s project, initially published by the South China Morning Post, sparked widespread discussion across social media platforms. Commentators commended the young developer for applying emerging technology toward family care and practical home solutions.
Ma plans to continue refining the application's code and features before relocating for his undergraduate studies later this year.
