Indore, Jun 10 (PTI) The authorities foiled a family's attempt to marry off a 15-year-old girl in Madhya Pradesh's Indore city, an official said on Monday.

A flying squad of the women and child development department stopped the ceremony in the MIG area on Sunday night, the official said.

"When our flying squad reached the spot following a tip-off, the mandap was decorated, and a priest had made arrangements for the wedding. The groom's aunt tried to mislead us by saying they were conducting a ritual of engagement," Mahendra Pathak, in charge of the flying squad, said.

When the squad interrogated the family members of the bride and groom, they admitted that the mandap was decorated for a wedding, he said.

The girl got acquainted with a 27-year-old man from Ahmedabad on social media, he said.

"The families claim that the couple had threatened to elope, and hence, they decided to get them married," he said.

Child marriage invites rigorous imprisonment of up to two years or a fine of Rs 1 lakh or both under the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006.
