Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (Maharashtra) [India], October 30 (ANI): Three workers were rescued after the slab of an under-construction commercial building collapsed in the Chikalthana area of Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, while a search operation is underway for one more worker feared trapped beneath the debris.

The incident took place on Jalna Road when the slab of the first-floor roof of the building suddenly collapsed during construction. According to preliminary information, the iron pipes used to support the roof structure bent during the concrete-pouring process, causing the slab to give way.

Around 15 workers were present at the construction site when the incident occurred. Initial reports indicated that three to four workers were trapped under the debris. Three workers have since been rescued, while two of them sustained injuries and were admitted to a hospital. Some other workers managed to escape safely.

Speaking to ANI, Senior Police Inspector, CIDCO MIDC, G S Raire, said, “15 workers were working at the construction site when the slab collapsed. While eight to nine workers managed to escape, four were present at the lower level. Of these, two sustained injuries and were shifted to a hospital, one managed to come out safely, while one worker remains trapped under the debris.”

"The rescue operation has been underway since yesterday, and we are making every possible effort to bring the trapped worker out safely. Our senior officers, including the ACP, DCP and Commissioner of Police, have visited the site and are guiding the operation. We have also deployed a canine unit to assist in the search," Raire said.

He added that the municipal corporation team, medical personnel and police teams were present at the spot, while machinery had been deployed to clear the debris. However, the operation was proving challenging as the rubble had become heavily compacted, making its removal difficult.

"We have deployed machines, but the rescue operation is challenging because the debris has become very compacted. Our teams are working continuously, and we are making every effort to complete the rescue as quickly as possible. We are confident that we will succeed," he said.

Following the incident, the fire department, police and rescue teams reached the spot and launched a rescue operation. Debris is being cleared with the help of heavy machinery, including JCB machines, cranes and two Poclain excavators, to reach the workers trapped underneath.

According to the police, the rescue operation is facing challenges as the concrete slab has hardened, making it difficult to remove the debris. Efforts are continuing to safely extract the remaining worker.

Senior police officers also reached the site to assess the situation as the rescue operation continued. (ANI)
