New Delhi, Jul 11 (PTI) A two-day national workshop aimed at improving English literacy among deaf students through the use of Indian Sign Language (ISL) concluded in New Delhi on Friday.

Organised by the Indian Sign Language Research and Training Centre (ISLRTC), the event brought together educators, experts and policymakers to share best practices for bilingual education.

Held on July 10 and 11, the workshop was inaugurated by Rajesh Aggarwal, secretary, Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (DEPwD). He emphasised the role of ISL as the first language of deaf individuals in supporting their cognitive and academic development.

Aggarwal said building English language skills would open up career opportunities and enable better integration of the deaf community into mainstream society. He also advocated the use of technology to boost literacy among people who are hard of hearing.

According to an official statement, the sessions were designed to equip educators with tools to better support deaf learners in mastering English while respecting the primacy of ISL.
