Scan. Print. Done: How Manohar Makarla Is Automating Campus Printing Across Hyderabad with Printzy. In every Indian college, there is a familiar bottleneck: the long, slow-moving queue at the campus print shop. Whether it's last-minute assignment submissions, lab record printouts, or hall tickets, students regularly find themselves at the mercy of opening hours, broken machines, and manual operators.

When Manohar Makarla set out to solve administrative friction at Dhanekula Institute of Engineering, he didn't set out to start a printing company. But while developing software to streamline student-college communication, one complaint echoed louder than all others: getting physical documents printed was an unnecessary daily hassle. That simple observation sparked a journey that is now transforming how physical services operate across Indian campuses.

The First Fix, and the Human Bottleneck

Manohar's initial response to the campus printing crunch was simple: build a print delivery platform. Students submitted their print jobs digitally via their smartphones, and a dedicated human operator processed, printed, and handed over the documents. On paper, it worked. Usage climbed rapidly. But as demand grew, a fundamental flaw emerged.

"The more we grew, the heavier our operations became," recalls Manohar. "Every additional student meant more manual labor, more human handling, and more logistical friction. A model built around a person in the loop gets harder to run precisely when it starts succeeding. " That realization marked the true turning point. The problem was never the act of printing itself; it was the operator standing in the middle of every single request.

The Pivot: From Service Delivery to Self-Service Infrastructure

Recognizing that adding human labor wouldn't scale, Manohar scrapped the original delivery setup entirely and rebuilt the architecture from the ground up. The result was Printzy: a completely unattended, self-service kiosk network designed specifically for high-footfall environments like university campuses and public spaces.

Printzy removes human dependency entirely through a simple 3-step digital workflow:

  • Upload: Students scan a QR code and send their files directly from their smartphones, with no app download needed.
  • Pay: Instant payment via UPI.
  • Collect: Documents are printed and released on-site instantly using a unique QR code or OTP.
Operating 24/7 without needing staff on-site, Printzy turned document printing from a clunky service into automated digital infrastructure.

Proven on Campus

Printzy kiosks are now deployed across Hyderabad colleges and have printed over 59,000 sheets so far. To take Printzy across India, Printzy franchise partnerships are rolling out soon, opening the model to local entrepreneurs, college partners, and site owners.

The Campus Operating System of Tomorrow

For Manohar, print kiosks are just the baseline.

"Printzy is our entry point," Manohar explains. "It's the first layer in building an everyday student utility platform, moving toward a comprehensive campus operating system. But every expansion traces back to the primary lesson of our first version: real problems aren't solved by adding people to a workflow, they are solved by removing the need for one. "
