Cybersecurity is entering a hyper-accelerated era where human-only defense is no longer a match for machine-speed threats. A new joint report by Protiviti Member Firm for India and the Indian Banks’ Association (IBA) warns that traditional, reactive security models are becoming obsolete as adversaries increasingly weaponize "Frontier AI" to launch highly automated attacks.
The report, titled "Frontier AI Unleashed: Rethinking Cyber Defense in the Age of AI Adversaries," was unveiled at the 5th CISO Summit & Citations 2026. It issues a stark wake-up call to enterprise leaders: attack timelines that used to take months have compressed into days or even hours, forcing an urgent evolution toward autonomous defense.
The Rise of the Machine-Speed Adversary
The democratization of advanced AI has drastically lowered the barrier to entry for cybercriminals. Bad actors are no longer just writing code manually; they are using powerful AI engines to automate reconnaissance, dynamically generate exploits, orchestrate mass phishing campaigns, and write sophisticated malware at an unprecedented scale.

"Organizations simply can't rely on traditional, reactive security models anymore. Building real cyber resilience in this new era means continuous validation, AI-enabled defenses and moving toward autonomous security operations."

Beyond tactical defenses, the report challenges corporate boards to rethink the role of cybersecurity entirely. Rather than viewing security as an expensive insurance policy or a isolated technical function, leaders must treat it as a core driver of digital trust and business growth.
Sandeep Gupta, Managing Director at Protiviti Member Firm for India, emphasizes that the transition to AI is both an immense business opportunity and an unprecedented risk vector.
"Companies can't afford to treat cybersecurity as a separate function anymore; resilience, governance and trust need to be built into every part of their AI strategy from the start," Gupta notes.
