Will Nissan Tekton Diesel Launch in India? Here's What You Should Know
The new Nissan Tekton has launched in India with prices from Rs 10.49 lakh, offering two turbo-petrol engines but no diesel variant. Nissan cites high development costs and emission norms as reasons for moving away from diesel, with hybrids expected to serve as the efficient alternative.
Nissan has officially launched the Tekton in India, introducing a feature-rich compact SUV with an introductory starting price of INR 10.49 lakh (ex-showroom). While the vehicle enters a competitive market, it notably lacks a diesel powertrain, a move that reflects shifting trends in the automotive industry and stricter emission regulations.
As per a report by CarDekho, the decision to omit diesel engines is driven by the significant development costs and complexities associated with meeting stringent corporate average fuel efficiency (CAFE) norms. Modern diesel vehicles require additional hardware, such as AdBlue urea systems for exhaust filters, which increase both price and maintenance issues for owners. Nissan Tekton Powertrain and Performance
The Nissan Tekton currently offers two turbo-petrol engine options. The powertrain lineup includes a 1-litre turbo petrol engine producing 100 PS and 166 Nm of torque, paired with a 6-speed manual transmission. Additionally, a 1.3-litre turbo petrol engine is available, delivering 163 PS and 280 Nm of torque, which can be configured with either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed DCT automatic transmission.
While diesel engines are often prized for their torque and fuel economy, hybrid powertrains are increasingly positioned as their spiritual successor in the Indian market. Hybrids have demonstrated superior fuel efficiency in urban environments and strong drivability, offering an alternative that avoids the complexities of diesel exhaust systems. Consequently, while no diesel Tekton is planned, there are expectations that a hybrid powertrain option may be introduced in the future, mirroring developments seen in its sibling vehicle, the Renault Duster.
